Making healthy homemade granola is both fun and very easy, but most of all, it’s so delicious. So many times I find myself going to the jar just to nibble on some granola as a snack.
You can make your own granola combination by using whatever ingredients you like and have on hand.

How to make Healthy Homemade Granola
- Place the dry ingredients in a bowl and then all the wet ingredients except the egg whites in another small bowl. Then mix together the dry ingredients with the wet. Finally, beat the egg white until foamy and then mix it with the granola mixture. Mix until well combined.
- Taste and see if you want it sweeter or perhaps add more spice.
- Then line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Pour out the granola mix and then press it down with a spatula, much like you are making a large granola bar.
- Bake at 150° C (300° F) for 30-40 minutes. After about half of the baking time, gently flip large pieces of the granola, then gently press down again with the back of a spatula. Then put the tray back in the oven to finish baking. In this way you will get nice big clusters.
- Don’t bake the granola for too long – just until it’s lightly golden on top. Your homemade granola will continue to crisp up as it cools.
- As soon as the granola is ready, remove it from the oven and add the chocolate flakes. The chocolate will melt and stick to the granola cluster. I personally prefer adding chocolate flakes instead of chocolate chips. However, you can use whatever you prefer.
- Turn off the oven. Then put the granola back in the turned off oven and let it cool there. This will allow it to get crispy and for the cluster to set.
- In this recipe I do not use any dried fruit. However, if you prefer to add some dried fruit, add it after the granola is baked and cooled.
Mix and match your own granola.
Dry ingredients
- 200 g / 2 cups : Oats Rolled or traditional (not quick oats)
- 100g / 1 cup : Nuts or/and seeds (e.g flax seed, pumpkin seeds, hazelnuts, pecans)
- 50 g / ½ cup : Coconut shredded , desiccated coconut or coconut flakes, unsweetened.
- 1 tbsp : Favorite spice (e.g cinnamon, cardamom, pumpkin spice)
- 70g / ½ cup : Chopped dried fruits (optional)
- 1 pinch : of Salt
- 1 tbsp : Brown sugar (optional)
Wet ingredients
- 60ml / ¼ cup : Coconut oil* melted
- 60 ml /¼ cup : Honey*
- 2 tsp : Extract (e.g Vanilla, almond)
Binder
- 1 : Egg white (from 1 egg)
Topping
- 40 g / ¼ cup : Dark chocolate flakes ( or chocolate chips) (optional)
Oats
Use traditional, old fashion or rolled oats* (in some countries they call it thick oats) and not instant/quick. You won’t get the same results with instant/quick oats. If you’re not sure what kind of oats you have, just look at the cooking time. If you need more than 5 minutes to cook it, then it is perfect for making granola.
Spices
I love the combination of cardamom and cinnamon. It reminds me of Swedish cinnamon buns.
Binder
As a binder, I use honey, coconut oil and egg white. Egg white is the ultimate food glue and it’s the ingredient that will make the perfect granola cluster. It also adds some extra protein to the granola.
Salt
Salt is really important to lift all the flavours, so don’t miss out on that ingredient.
Store in an airtight container at room-temperature for up to 2 weeks.
